Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly determined to outscore Lionel Messi this season, and according to Don Balon, has become obsessed with the idea.
The rivalry between the two has been well documented over the years, with the Real Madrid and Barcelona stars regarded as the best players the game has ever seen.
Ronaldo may be set to win the Ballon d’Or this season after winning the Liga and Champions League, but is already worried abut his suspension in the league and the amount of goals Messi has netted for Barcelona.
In addition, Real are lagging behind them in the La Liga standings after dropping points with two draws on the bounce, and have badly missed their star man – not to mention Alvaro Morata, who of course went to Chelsea in the summer.
Despite the rivalry between the two, the relationship has become better now the players have got older, and settled down to become fathers, with Ronaldo’s son a huge fan of Messi to boot, and too shy to speak to him when he saw him at the Ballon d’Or awards.
Ronaldo has previously claimed he has a good relationship with Messi, saying: “Whenever I’m with him, I have a very good relationship with Messi.
“It’s not that I go to his house and eat together. He is not a friend, but I consider him a companion by profession and not a rival because I don’t like it, like comparisons.
“It is part of the work and the world of football.
“I really enjoy seeing him on the pitch and all the great players.
“I like to see all good players and Messi is one of them. He is a player.”
Messi, for his part, says pretty much the same thing about Ronaldo, but will be desperate for Barcelona to match and better Real this season, after a poor time out last term and a summer transfer window that left many fans frustrated.
